Pharos Station Security

Technologies

Technology is an integral part of any sci-fi based role-play environment, but uncontrolled technological advancement is dangerous and detrimental to the overall feel of the setting, even to the point of hampering the role-play experience.

Pharos Station is not a "technologically-oriented" setting. Technology should not be the driving focus of play, but rather the characters and their stories. Each new situation you put (or find) your characters in should not be solved by some new technological trinket where they player comes up with some pseudo-scientific-techno-babble to explain away the situation. Instead, let your characters rely on wits, cunning, and cooperation.

Technology should be a supporting character in your stories, not have a starring role. It should be a tool that is taken for granted, much the way personal computers and cell phones are today. Technology is common, well-known and well-used in the Pharos Station realm. Yes, there are still new technologies to be discovered, but innovations are the exception rather than the rule.

We are not going to define every little gizmo or gadget that could be used or referenced in the setting. The list below is a list of some averages to give folks new to sci-fi and to the Pharos Station setting an idea of what they might see or use during the course of their play. Every little item does NOT have to be referenced on this list to be 'legal' for use in the setting.

  • The most common propulsion systems for the average space ship include Star Pulse, hyperdrive, and jump drive. Core Drive propulsion systems are less common but not unheard of. Psi-drives are very rare since they are expensive and require a telekinetic pilot.
  • The most commonly used personal weapon is the phase blaster and concussive pistol. Larger variants are not unheard of. Projectile weapons are not as common due to regulations within most space station environments however a number of planets still mass produce such weapons.
  • In the event of an emergency requiring evacuation, please proceed to the nearest jump pad point. Activating a jump pad point during a non-emergency situation is punishable by fines and imprisonment. In case of fire or loss of power, use the stairs to evacuate to the next level of the station.
  • New to the station? Need a job? Need a career change? If so, visit any one of our convenient Job Registration Stations. Look for the green domed kiosks situated near each docking bay.
  • Bad area of the station? Oh yeah. You never want to be caught in the Nethers by yourself. Why, last night I heard someone else got themselves mugged. Big guy too. His modified blast pistol wasn't enough against the gang that jumped him.
